Frequently Asked Questions for Patients with Aetna and United Healthcare.

Why is Greenville Family Medicine (GFM) seeking to negotiate its contract with Aetna and United Healthcare (UHC)? Aetna and UHC have reimbursement rates that are significantly lower than those of other commercial insurance carriers. We are currently in negotiations with them and remain hopeful for a resolution before our contracts expire. If Aetna and UHC do not agree to increase their rates to the standard reimbursement rate, we will be unable to continue accepting these insurances and stay in operation. Please note that these negotiations do not currently include Aetna Medicare Advantage plans, Aetna Better Health of IL (Medicaid), and UHC Medicare Advantage plans.

When do GFM’s current contracts expire? Our current contract with Aetna expires on February 29, 2024. Our current contract with UHC expires on April 30, 2024. We will update this page as more information becomes available or if these dates change.

What will happen if GFM’s contracts expire? If Aetna or UHC refuse to raise their reimbursement rates to match other commercial insurance carriers, GFM will no longer participate as an in-network provider. Patients with this insurance will be classified as “self-pay” patients. Self-pay patients will receive a 50% discount and must make a payment at the time of service.

Will I be terminated as a patient if you no longer accept my insurance? We are deeply committed to caring for our patients and will be happy to continue seeing you in our office. We have payment policies in place for those potentially affected by these changes.

What will services at GFM cost me if you don’t accept my insurance? Please contact our office at 618-664-1240 for specific pricing.

How can I (and other patients) help these negotiations? Patients can get in touch with the member services department of their respective insurance company and request that they engage in negotiations with GFM. The phone number to the member services department can typically be found on the back of your insurance card.
